Some riders and accessory sales consultants are (mistakenly) under the impression that Arai faceshields are difficult to change. I have met Arai owners who are intimidated by the idea of changing the shield. In fact, recent Arai full-face helmets are designed for the quickest shield change around. With a little practice, you can quickly change from tint to clear and back again, without every considering it an inconvenience. For a demonstration, see this video featuring racer Nicky Hayden and others.
If I can do it, so can you. My first try, looking in the side mirror of a rented R12R . . . took maybe 10 seconds! It takes more time to get the “new” shield out of the storage pouch and to place the take-off back in the pouch. As Nicky points out, it is definitely easier to change the Arai shield with the helmet on and buckled.
As for a suitable shield pouch, there are several products out there, but sometimes they are difficult to find. Arai actually sells a pouch that is pre-curved and holds two shields, but for some reason the pouch is not available through Arai’s motorcycle helmet distribution. If your favorite cycle dealer doesn’t have a pouch that suits you, the Arai pouches are available here:
Now. . . you Arai wearers have no excuses for having the wrong shield installed in the sun or shade. Ride safely and enjoy! Submitted by BMWROK member: Jim Horton
